Alec Baldwin Wins Major Victory In Rust Shooting Case
After receiving charges that could land him up to five years in prison, Alec Baldwin has won a major victory in his legal battle in the wake of the Rust shooting incident. A prominent actor who earned his fame after starring as Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, Baldwin is under scrutiny after the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on set. As Baldwin was holding the gun when Hutchins was shot and killed, he has been one of the targets of a lengthy legal investigation.
Baldwin’s legal representatives have previously called the Rust shooting charges unconstitutional, and recent developments indicate that they were correct. New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwie has now dropped the firearm enhancement to Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter charges, according to a report by Deadline. The dropped enhancement would have added three and a half years to Baldwin’s maximum possible sentencing, should he be found guilty.

The Rust shooting occurred on October 21, 2021, at a ranch in Bonanza City, New Mexico. After being given a revolver that was allegedly described as a « cold gun » by first assistant director David Halls, Baldwin was rehearsing a scene for the film when the gun fired. The shooting resulted in an injury for director Joel Souza and Hutchins’ death, and new Rust shooting details are constantly being produced by local police and FBI investigators.
Baldwin has repeatedly claimed that he did not fire the gun, but investigators allege that he was still partially responsible for Hutchins’ fate. Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has also been charged and is currently being investigated for her ties to the Colt 45. revolver. Disputations are still ongoing and charges may continue to change.
Multiple lawsuits have resulted from the shooting with Baldwin, the family of the deceased, and script supervisor Mamie Mitchell each filing suit in the wake of Hutchin’s death.
