Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars Movie Story Details Reportedly Revealed

Shortly after it was announced that Damon Lindelof was writing a new Star Wars movie new details about the project have been released. Following the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019, Lucasfilm has struggled to get a new Star Wars movie off the ground. While Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was set for release in December 2023, the film was taken off the release schedule due to creative differences.

It was recently confirmed that Lost creator Damon Lindelof was working on a new Star Wars film for Lucasfilm. Lindelof and Lucasfilm brought on Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy to help usher the project in. No details were revealed regarding the film, but many assumed Disney and Lucasfilm were aiming to have the movie ready for release in December 2025 as they have already set a date aside for a Star Wars movie.

More details regarding Lindelof’s upcoming Star Wars project have been revealed as The Hollywood Reporter mentions that Lindelof’s story would reportedly take place after The Rise of Skywalker, but it is not a continuation of the Skywalker Saga. The article mentions the upcoming movie could feature some returning characters from the sequel trilogy and, though intended as a stand-alone story, the door is open for more movies if it is a hit with critics and audiences. While Lucasfilm’s original plan was to develop new trilogies it appears the studio is focusing on stand-alone projects.

The news that Lucasfilm would be making a Star Wars movie after the sequel trilogy is certainly an interesting development. For the most part, the franchise has been exploring the era between the prequels and the original trilogy with projects like Andor, or in the five years after Return of the Jedi, as with The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm is also developing The Acolyte for Disney+ which will take place outside of the Skywalker Saga during the era of the High Republic. It appears Disney and Lucasfilm plan to take Star Wars into unexplored territories both in the past and the future.

A story set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is certainly bound to raise some questions about which characters will return if any. Actors like Oscar Isaac and John Boyega have hinted they are done with Star Wars for the near future, but there are still plenty of other characters who could appear. The story could feature Rey and her attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order or a larger role for Rose Tico, whom many felt was unfairly sidelined in the last film. A safe bet is also characters that don’t require actors, such as BB-8 or Babu Frik. If the next project truly does take place after The Rise of Skywalker, it could be a chance to win back audiences who were left disappointed by the final entry in the Skywalker Saga and set up a new future for the Star Wars franchise.
