Joker 2 Art Imagines Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Costume

Joker: Folie à Deux fan art creates a rendering of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. After the worldwide success of Todd Phillips’ Joker in 2019, a sequel was quickly in order, though it took some time to get properly rolling. Officially announced this past summer, Joker: Folie à Deux is set for a 2024 release. The plot is as of yet unknown.

In the meantime, Instagram artist Jaxson Derr releases a photo rendering of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Derr’s imagining plays on the deck-of-card elements of The Joker’s character. This Harley Quinn is dressed in red, white, and black, and her dress is parted down the middle with spades. She is encircled by gyrating clouds of Joker playing cards as she looks up with closed eyes, her face painted a simple bone white with red lipstick. Check out Derr’s incredible art below:

What We Know About Joker 2 So Far

Fan art like this essentially makes up the bulk of the imagery available for Joker: Folie à Deux thus far. The movie’s official announcement came in June along with a nondescript poster revealing the title and the names of the film’s writers, Phillips and Scott Silver. Other than that, the plot of the Joker sequel is still largely unknown. Besides Gaga as Harley Quinn and Joaquin Phoenix’s return in the lead role, other confirmed Joker: Folie à Deux cast members include Zazie Beetz, Brendan Gleeson, and Catherine Keener.

The working title Joker: Folie à Deux may give viewers more of a glimpse into the sequel than one might think. Folie à Deux translates directly to “madness of two,” and is most commonly used to describe a mental illness that is shared by two deeply interlinked individuals. Likely, this title indicates that Joker: Folie à Deux will dive deeper into the mental illness aspect of Phoenix’s character than the first film did. Secondly, the title may mean that Joker: Folie à Deux will explore how Arthur Fleck’s mental illnesses correspond with another closely-related character in the film. This character could be someone from Fleck’s traumatic past, such as his mother, who could appear in flashbacks in this film. More likely, this Folie à Deux could refer to the twisted relationship between Phoenix’s Joker and Gaga’s rendition of Harley Quinn.

Why Lady Gaga Will Make a Great Harley Quinn

Gaga’s role in Joker 2 has been one of the most anticipated aspects of the film. Now a Best Actress Academy Award nominee (for A Star is Born), and a Golden Globe winner, Gaga has made the transition from powerhouse singer to a singing-acting double threat in recent years. The wacky costumes and vibrant performances that define Gaga’s career suggest that she would be well-suited to play The Joker’s partner in love and evil. Her work as The Countess on FX’s wild genre ride American Horror Story: Hotel further proves that. As Joker: Folie à Deux continues its development, hopefully fans will get to see some real images of Gaga’s Harley Quinn roll around soon enough.
