Nicolas Cage Reportedly In Discussions For National Treasure Sequel Return
Nicolas Cage is reportedly in discussions to return for a new National Treasure sequel as Benjamin Gates. Disney launched the National Treasure franchise in 2004 with the release of the first film starring Nicolas Cage. The movie followed his character Benjamin Gates as he traveled the world searching for hidden treasures tied to world history. While the National Treasure movies were not well-received critically, they were massive box office hits for the studio. However, it has been 15 years since National Treasure: Book of Secrets hit theaters and audiences got a chance to see Nicolas Cage as part of the franchise.
Disney has spent the last decade trying to figure out what to do with the National Treasure franchise. Plans for National Treasure 3 with Nicolas Cage failed to gain any real momentum throughout the years. The launch of Disney+ gave the studio a new chance to use the IP, with National Treasure: Edge of History coming to Disney’s streaming service in December 2022. Although the series is a soft-reboot of the movie franchise, it does include the return of Justin Bartha as Riley Poole. There has since been hope that Nicolas Cage could return as Benjamin Gates for another National Treasure adventure as a result.
According to a new report from THR, Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure return could be happening. The outlet reports that Cage is in « various stages of discussions » for a National Treasure sequel return. It is not confirmed if the new project will be National Treasure 3 or a potential return as part of National Treasure: Edge of History. All that is known right now is that Nicolas Cage is talking to Disney about starring in another National Treasure sequel.
Disney has been developing National Treasure 3 since 2007, but reports that Cage is in discussions to return is one of the first true signs of a sequel happening. The long wait between sequels has confused many, resulting in just about everyone involved with the franchise sharing their reasons behind the delays. Nicolas Cage has previously attributed National Treasure 3 not happening due to underwhelming box office hauls for other movies that featured him as a lead. Now that the actor is on the rise again thanks to movies like Pig or The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, that could be why Disney is now trying to get him back as Benjamin Gates.
Any plans that involve Nicolas Cage returning to National Treasure could still take a few years to materialize, though. Unless he makes a surprise cameo in the National Treasure Disney+ show, audiences will have to wait for a second season or National Treasure 3 to see him again. The movie sequel is still not officially announced, even though its script got a positive update a few months ago. It will still take Disney at least another two years to make Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure sequel from the time he signs on, so hopefully the discussions are finalized before too long.
