Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Winchesters season 1 episode 3.The showrunner of The Winchesters reveals that the love story between John and Mary Winchester will have more speed bumps along the way. The series is a prequel to the popular CW show Supernatural, which ran for 15 seasons from 2005 through 2020. Executive produced and narrated by Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, the show follows the parents of Supernatural’s lead characters Sam and Dean Winchester. The Winchesters takes place in the 1970s as John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) meet and begin to fight monsters while searching for their missing fathers.
Although so far The Winchesters has shown John and Mary having an almost instant connection, the most recent episode (episode 3 « You’re Lost Little Girl ») threw a few wrenches into the works. These wrenches come in the form of two potential alternative love interests. First, they revealed that John’s friend Betty (Andrea Londo) is actually his ex-fiancée when she returns his engagement ring to him. Then, they show Mary going on a date with a young man named Kyle (Ryan McCartan of Heathers: The Musical).
EW had the opportunity to sit down with The Winchesters showrunner Robbie Thompson to discuss those surprises in episode 3. He said that one of the first things they discussed when sitting down to plot the season was the fact that « they weren’t just sitting at home every Friday night when there wasn’t a monster case. » The lives that John and Mary have outside of each other aren’t going to be easy to navigate, as the writers « like to complicate things for our characters. » Read his full quote below:
When we first first talked about the show, we asked, « What are the things that we can do to mess with expectations and also just play the history of what these kids lives were? » They weren’t just sitting at home every Friday night when there wasn’t a monster case. What was life like for them? That’s where Kyle and Betty came in very early in the process. We just started talking about: what is the world that John left behind and what is the world that Mary has been ignoring and longing for? And those two characters stepped very quickly into the picture.
You will definitely see more of Kyle, and you’ll definitely see more of Betty in future episodes. We like to complicate things for our characters, and there will definitely be some more complications.
Supernatural fans know quite a bit about what is in store for John and Mary Winchester in the future. Unfortunately, because of a deal with the demon Azazel in 1973, Mary is killed in 1983 when Sam is just a baby. John does appear in the early days of the series, as played by The Walking Dead’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but his disappearance forms the major throughline of Supernatural season 1 and he does eventually die over the course of the series.
The Winchesters takes place in 1972, a year before she makes her deal with Azazel and six years before she gets pregnant with Dean. These particular milestones are likely immutable in the canon of the new series, considering its Supernatural connection. However, this series has a long way to go before the hunting partners love each other enough to make such a major sacrifice, and this season likely will take viewers to just the halfway point of them properly getting together before throwing further hurdles in their path in season 2.
