TMNT’s Newest Event is Their Very Own Game of Thrones

It seems absurd to consider any kind of connection between Game of Thrones and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but as crazy as it sounds, they’re actually way more alike than fans would ever think possible–something that is being established in TMNT’s newest event: Armageddon Game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Armageddon Game is an ongoing event that is detailing an all-out war between mutants, aliens, and gods. After years of build-up and subtle hints throughout IDW’s TMNT comic series, the villainous Rat King–an elder god who is hellbent on taking over the world just for the sake of satiating his boredom–is finally attacking. While the TMNT are the only ones to stop the villain, the Rat King isn’t really concerned with them at all aside from viewing them as pieces on a board. The Rat King is just one of an entire family of deities, and all of them are playing an eternal game with each god representing their own divine kingdoms and houses–a game which will decide who will become the ruler of the world.

In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #59 by Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Bobby Curnow, and Dave Wachter, another eternal god within the TMNT universe, Kitsune, launches an attack against Splinter. The reason for this attack is due to Splinter’s new position as the leader of the Foot Clan after Splinter killed the Shredder. This put a damper on Kitsune’s plans for world domination as she was using the Shredder and his Foot ninjas as her own personal army in preparation for the inevitable Armageddon Game. During their battle in this issue, Splinter speaks with Kitsune, asking about a ‘game’ that she and her god-like siblings are playing with mankind as he is aware of Kitsune’s true motives, despite the fact that nothing had been officially revealed at this point in time. Kitsune explains that this game (which is coming to fruition in Armageddon Game) isn’t just one played by immortals, but one that everyone on Earth is a part of, saying, “The only choice–the only rule–is to be quick or to be dead”.

Armageddon Game Plays by the Same Rules as the Game of Thrones

“When you play the Game of Thrones, you win, or you die”. These are the immortal words uttered by Cersei Lannister to Ned Stark in the first season of Game of Thrones, and with this one line, the entire series was perfectly summed up. Throughout Game of Thrones, those with honor don’t seem to last very long as only the conniving can continue playing the game. In other words, the people of Westeros have to act fast and deliberately if they want to stay alive, no matter what that entails. Just as the different Houses in Westeros are maneuvering to have their favored person sit on the Iron Throne and have a hand in ruling the Seven Kingdoms, the gods and mortals within Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are fighting their own war, with the winner’s prize being the proverbial throne of complete dominion over the Earth.

While the details between the two storylines are noticeably different, as TMNT is firmly placed within the Sci-Fi genre while Game of Thrones is about as High Fantasy as a story can get, the main plot points between Armageddon Game and Game of Thrones are nearly identical–proving that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ newest event is their very own Game of Thrones.
