Creator Mike White reveals The White Lotus season 2 premiere will feature Survivor contestants. The highly-acclaimed comedy-drama debuted on HBO in summer of 2021 and quickly became a hit with audiences. Originally slated as a limited series, positive critical and viewer reaction led to a season 2 being confirmed after its premiere. Lauded for its writing and performances, The White Lotus was the most-awarded series at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, winning 10 in the limited series category. The satire features an ensemble cast including Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Jon Gries, Sydney Sweeney, and Molly Shannon.
The White Lotus follows the interweaving stories of the wealthy, dysfunctional guests and their employees at the titular luxurious resort chain, The White Lotus, in Hawaii. Chronicling various plot lines throughout its initial run, Coolidge’s Tanya and Gries’ Greg, who fell in love during season 1, are the only two characters confirmed to return in season 2. Season 2 will change to the fictional hotel’s Italian location, and will feature a host of fresh faces including Aubrey Plaza, Will Sharpe, Theo James, Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Imperioli, and Tom Hollander.
Now, creator White reveals a few Survivor contestants will also be making cameos in The White Lotus’ season 2 premiere when asked by Variety. White is a former Survivor contestant himself, appearing in 2018’s Survivor: David vs. Goliath. White shared the news on the red carpet of the show’s premiere.
Season 2 is shaping up to be almost as brutal as Survivor, based on the The White Lotus’ first trailer and what has been shared by its stars. Revealed to be more ‘sinister’ and dive deeper into the ‘sexual politics’ of its characters, season 2 is on track to explore the darkest, most distorted of human complexities. Season 1 exposed the true ugliness of human nature, but it appears season 2 will take it a step further by having the hotel guests’ location affect the intensity of what they’re experiencing. One storyline, featuring two American couples on vacation together, The Babcocks (James & Fahy), and The Spillers (Will Sharpe & Plaza), seems to exemplify the season’s high stakes, with a focus on the plot’s backdrop allowing the characters to feel ‘sexually free,’ possibly signaling an infidelity plot line.
In addition to young newlywed struggles, it seems trouble is ahead for Tanya (Collidge) and Greg (Gries), who appear tense in the trailer. While season 1 celebrated their relationship and a happy ending was guaranteed for the two, season 2 will be realistic about what happens after the honeymoon stage ends. The inclusion of Survivor contestant goes well with the season’s themes, considering how intense it is slated to be. While it is still unknown exactly what their role will be in the premiere, it’s clear the season will be just as wild as the typical Survivor setting. Hopefully, The White Lotus season 2 will live up to viewers’ expectations, and deliver the same quality performances it did so impressively in season 1.
